For this Top Five Apps, I am putting on my “speech hat”. As a practicing speech & language pathologist, I am constantly on the lookout for apps that are appropriate for my older students (ages 9-14). These apps must be directly aligned to their IEP goals, but they can’t be babyish or boring. Over the past year, I have found some really unique apps that may not be considered traditional therapy apps, but they have given me excellent results, so I wanted to share them with the community of SLPs who follow us here at Fun Educational Apps.
Wee Kids Math enters the App Store at a time when there are literally hundreds of math apps available for young children. Fortunately, this is an outstanding app that deserves to be recognized for its design as well as its entertainment value. For promoting math as an activity that kids (ages 5-8) can enjoy, Fun Educational Apps awards it a Top Pick in the category of primary level math apps.
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls. You are about to enter the world of Wee Kids ABC. For your enjoyment, it offers word puzzles and games that will entertain and amuse your child. At the same time, it will strengthen his letter and word recognition skills. Step right up, and see for yourself.
Spelling is one of those things that every child needs to know. Many of us remember studying (or memorizing) word lists for the weekly spelling test. Then promptly forgetting the words. This app sets out to make spelling memorable. Like its predecessor, Mr. Thorne's Spellbook 2: Master Edition gives kids a fun way to practice this essential skill.
Adagio (pronounced ah-dah-zhee-o) is a musical term that means, “music played in a leisurely manner.” If you can picture a child who is mesmerized by the notes played on a digital piano, you can see why creating a child-friendly piano app is such a marvelous idea. Adagio: The Musical Touch for Kids has simplified the experience of playing the piano down to the most basic level.

Seek and find activities are always a favorite with the preschool crowd and Tiny Firefighters is sure to be the same. Firefighters are such a fascinating topic for youngsters and the hidden animations in this app will delight toddlers and preschoolers.
Sometimes adults take for granted how important number skills are. We can tally with a glance and carry calculators in our pockets on our phones. For toddlers and preschoolers, numbers are almost a foreign language. One that needs to be taught, practiced, and used daily. Counting Apps are a great way to do all of these things. Children are immersed in number skills using any of our Top Five Counting Apps.
There are stories within every child, even if those stories are as simple as “I broke my toy and I cried” or as complex as “The unicorn was running with the princess in the forest, and then the birds came, and they all played for a while.” Children’s narratives help them talk about the world around them and stretch their imaginations. Toonia Storymaker turns these narratives into mini-books that can be saved and shared. At Fun Educational Apps, we applaud developers who show us new ways to use technology to unlock a child’s creativity, so we award our latest Top Pick to Toonia Storymaker.
