There are stories within every child, even if those stories are as simple as “I broke my toy and I cried” or as complex as “The unicorn was running with the princess in the forest, and then the birds came, and they all played for a while.” Children’s narratives help them talk about the world around them and stretch their imaginations. Toonia Storymaker turns these narratives into mini-books that can be saved and shared. At Fun Educational Apps, we applaud developers who show us new ways to use technology to unlock a child’s creativity, so we award our latest Top Pick to Toonia Storymaker. |

Leo's Pad Appisode 1 is a brand new app by developer Kidaptive, Inc. and a top pick as a unique learning experience. The interactive video-like app puts young learners into the story as they go to a birthday party with the main character. With a continuous video interspersed with a variety of preschool level interactions, the app easily holds the viewer's interest. |
Leo's Pad is the first appisode of a series created by the developer Kidaptive. Created on the basis that children learn best when immersed in the experience, this app addresses a number of basic concepts all in a seamless viewing encounter. The app loads initially to a menu with each appisode available (only one is currently available with the next release scheduled for January 2013). Appisode One - Gally's Birthday is free and a great trial run. The graphics are absolutely outstanding and reminiscent of high quality HD video. The characters are detailed and engaging and easy to connect with.
Join an eight year old Leonardo da Vinci as he seeks out his pet dragon and gets ready for a birthday party. Watch a clever little video with seamless transitions to engaging basic concept activities. Begin by identifying basic colors and shapes as the dragon plays hide and seek. Next help Leonardo create a telescope for his friend Gally's (Galileo) birthday. Identify and put together basic shapes in a telescope puzzle. Show off your artistic side by creating a birthday card for Gally using a painting game complete with stickers. Solve a simple math problem to launch Leonardo into the sky to help him fly. Lastly, use the telescope to find letter constellations in the sky. Pull the letters out of the sky and create simple three letter words using them.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
This appisode has simply stunning graphics and the video is really well done. The characters are almost 3D in their animation and the video is great. The seamless transitions to the mini-games are wonderful, keeping young learners fully engaged in a learning activity - all in the scope of watching a movie. The characters of Leonardo da Vinci and Galileo and the details that make them great characters really appeal to me. I loved that Leonardo was creating a telescope for Galileo and uses his flying machine to get to the party. The basic concepts covered by the mini-games are also really good - though I'd love to see them last just a few questions longer. I see kids being completely engaged in the video and think that they will easily sit through a few more skills questions before moving on to the next part of the video.
Overall, Leo's Pad is a top pick as a unique learning experience built into a high quality movie. Young learners will be fully engaged in the video and will easily participate in the learning games without even recognizing that they are working on educational skills. I'm anxious to see more from the developer including future appisodes, and the parent dashboard that is advertised as in development.
Leo's Pad Appisode 1 is available for download via the iTunes App Store - iPad and iPad Mini Apps - Free for a Limited Time!
