How the App Works-
The Little Grey Bird has a very simple user interface. The choice to turn the narration on or off occurs on the opening screen. On each page, there are just a few basic controls. The arrow to move ahead is located in the lower right corner, along with an index button that allows you to access any page of the story. In the upper left corner is the repeat button.
The story begins with an all-too-common situation: the little grey bird is left tearfully behind while all the other baby birds are out learning to fly. "His brothers and sisters had jumped on a breeze, soaring and diving the blue sky with ease; but little grey bird was too afraid to try, hiding under his wing a tear welled in his eye."
Each of the pages of The Little Grey Bird is designed to look like a collage. This is especially effective with the feathery layers that shape the little grey bird's delicate body. Animations are plentiful on every page, with leaves that rustle, walking sticks that move, a squirrel that collects acorns, and a fluttering dove. The musical background adds a lyrical dimension to the story with a recurring song that comes to symbolize the bird's journey from despair to joy.
There are also four coloring pages that provide a creative outlet for children with multiple paint colors and brushes of various sizes. While the pages cannot be saved, they allow them an opportunity to retell the story as they paint the various characters.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked-
Psychologists report an increase in anxiety and associated stress disorders in today's children. The message in this simple little story is actually quite profound-"It's hard to be brave, but with the support and encouragement of others, you can do things you never dreamed you could." Children need to hear this message over and over again, so that it becomes part of their internal self-talk.
In A Nutshell-
Written in simple language with appealing rhymes and sound patterns, The Little Grey Bird lets children (ages 5 and under) see how a fearful flier goes from "I can't" to "I did it!" There is an important lesson to be learned here.
