Learning to understand and use pronouns correctly is a skill most children develop by age 4. Children who have language delays often do not learn correct pronoun usage until age 6 or beyond. The Pronoun Party is an invaluable tool for special education teachers and speech/language pathologists who need a way to provide structured practice to students so they can improve their grammar. It's our latest TOP PICK for Fun Educational Apps.

How the App Works-
The Pronoun Party is an iPad app developed by Bugalugs Early Childhood Learning. It consists of four learning levels:
Level 1: Gender identification (Boy or girl?)
Level 2: Subject pronouns (He/She)
Level 3: Possessive pronouns (Hers/His)
Level 4: Possessive pronouns (Her/Him)
For each level, the child chooses a background from a group of four. There is a beach scene, a party scene, a bedroom scene, and park scene. A sentence is presented at the bottom of the page, and at the same time, the narrator reads it.
For example, "The girl has an apple." The child slides the apple over to the girl, and is reinforced for that choice ("That's right." "Well done.") If the choice is incorrect, and the child slides the apple over to the boy, the narrator says, "Oops, try again." A response counter is located in the upper left hand corner; there is also a handy percentage tracker there as well. Each level contains 20-30 items per background. It is possible to access levels in any order.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked-
The Pronoun Party is bright and colorful with illustrations that are appropriate for this age. I appreciate the fact that children are represented with a variety of skin colors and ethnic backgrounds.
The app is simple enough that children can practice by themselves. This means it can be used as an independent therapy activity, while still allowing the responses to be tabulated. I think this is a big improvement over my pronoun flash cards.
In a Nutshell-
The Pronoun Party uses colorful images of boys and girls having fun to encourage children to practice understanding what pronouns mean.
The app is divided into four different practice levels with multiple scenes available at each level. It was awarded a TOP PICK in the category of therapy apps because of its clear purpose, its intuitive user interface, and its inclusive artwork.
