Easy Spelling Aid by Nuapp Productions is an app that spells words for users. Simply tap the microphone and state the word you wish spelled, and the app puts the word on screen in both capital letters and lowercase letters. With a variety of different setting options, this app is a great tool for the elementary classroom.
Have a Look:
How the App Works-
Easy Spelling Aid app is very intuitive to use. Upon first use, users simply tap the spinning microphone in the middle of the screen, state the word they wish spelled in a clear voice, tap again and the word appears on screen.
Additionally, the app has several settings to manipulate. Users can select the language from:
English (UK, US, Australian), Chinese, Croatian, Czech, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish.
Users can also select for the app to read the word once it is processed. Depending on the language, the word is read in the language selected. Another option is to select a writing style from five different options in both regular print or cursive varieties. You can also select a background from either plain or with writing lines. A dyslexic option is also available. This action has the print show up on different colored backgrounds, or have the print in a different color.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
As a teacher, one of my standards is to teach students to use sources to help them spell words correctly. Traditionally students are taught to use a dictionary. I also teach my students how to effectively use spellcheck, and now with the integration of iPads in education I taught them to use Siri. This app is a nice tool for my classroom. While Siri will pull up the word, it often also pulls up links that may not be appropriate for my students.
Having an app where students can simply request the spelling of a word will really cut down on the time my students use looking up the correct spelling of words. In today's age, dictionaries are becoming more and more obsolete. This app is a nice transition to digital spelling. I had an opportunity to have several of my students use the app, with good success. The students have moderate southern United States accents. I also utilized the app at home, giving it several different words to spell.
The only problem area I noticed was in homophones, words that sound alike but have different spellings. The app has no way to differentiate between formats of words. I liked the options for different print styles and backgrounds. As well as the dyslexic options. Being able to have the app read the word is a great way for students to check if the app actually heard their word correctly.
In a Nutshell-
Easy Spelling Aid is a simple app, yet one that teachers and parents of early writers will find useful. In today's digital age, this is definitely a 21st-century tool for students.
