I'm no musical genius, but Perfect Piano may be the app that helps me start down that path. This app gets a Top Pick rating from me. It has a wealth of information in it for people wanting to learn to play, practice, or master piano. With different modes, this app is truly a mobile musical device.
Apps for iOS - iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch and Android
The app has two settings: a learn to play setting and a straight keyboard.
The straight keyboard is as one would expect from this setting. Users open up the keyboard to a completely customizable set of keys. Users can choose to play a single row of keys, a dual row, or two player mode which puts two keyboards on the screen facing in opposite directions. Additionally, in this setting users can choose which instrument they want to play from the freebies: piano, music box, or synth bass.
If you purchase a VIP pass, which are available as variously priced in-app purchases, you can also play the organ, Rhodes, string ensemble, soprano sax, electric piano, or space synth. Users can also select how many keys are visible on the screen, from 5 to 52 keys. In the keyboard mode, users simply play the piano. The app's touch sensors were very accurate. Allowing for me to explore chords or single note melodies. Additionally, I could record any tune that I played.
The learn to play mode was extensive. The app comes with a large selection of free preloaded songs. The songs are categorized into simple, medium, or hard and there are about 25 songs in each of these categories. Additional songs are available online and sorted in to musical genre if you purchased one of those paid VIP passes. Songs range in genre from simple songs like Happy Birthday to classical music like Fur Elise, to more modern things like The Mario Brothers theme song or Don't Cry For Me, Argentina.
After selecting a song to learn, user selects the play mode. They can practice, watch and listen, or pause mode. They can also choose which mode they want to learn in and whether or not the keyboard is scrollable. Once beginning, colors fall from the top of the keyboard indicating which keys the user needs to press. In one mode, the bar length is how long the user must press the note, but in the other keyboard style, the actual notes are displayed. This might be more appropriate for people who know how to read music.
Within the settings on the learn to play mode, users can adjust the speed of the falling notes to the original, medium, or slow speeds. They can adjust which mode they're in and choose which instrument and how many keys are visible while they practice.
The pause mode is great for beginners. It actually pauses the falling notes above the key that should be tapped before continuing on. While the songs in the simple mode are easier than the other songs, it should be noted that medium and hard songs are definitely for the more advanced piano players. These involve the use of both hands, scrolling the keyboard, and playing chords.
In A Nutshell-
I was very impressed by Perfect Piano. I have the most basic of music reading abilities and certainly don't call myself a musician. The app was very fun to play with and the learn to play mode can be utilized by both children and adults. The songs in the medium and hard levels are certainly for the more advanced players. I think this app would be an incredible tool in music classes across the world. It's such a different way of learning to play an instrument.
With all of the different settings and customization tools, users at any level could benefit from this app. I call this a Top Pick, with the qualifier that I am a novice.
