Mars Counts To 10 by Lila James can be found in your iBooks app after purchase. This is for the most part, a wordless story. The numbers through 10 are featured one to a page, with a video of each in between. Join Mars and his friend Barbara as they count to 10.
What's the App About:
The pages of this book are simple. After being introduced to the dogs, readers see one number per page. A photograph of the corresponding number of dogs accompanies each digit. The higher the number, the more dog pictures. Each dog has a speech bubble that can be tapped to hear him "speak". Yips, yaps, ruffs, and bowwows accompany the numbers of the story.
Additionally, the narrator states the number if you just tap the speech icon next to the digit. In between each page featuring a number, is a page with a video. Tap the play button to see a musical montage featuring the number from the page before. This digital experience features both the numerical and written number, along with upbeat music, often with a Latin flare.
At the end of the book, several pages show the digit equal to a set number of dogs. Tap on the speech icon to hear the corresponding amount of barks. This is a good opportunity to practice counting to ten.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
Mars Counts To 10 iBook is appropriate for our youngest children. It held the interest of my two-year-old for several pages, but not all the way through to the end of the book. With her current infatuation with dogs, she did thoroughly enjoy being able to make the dogs bark. The repetition of hearing the number repeated so many times was also nice facet. The pages are very simple, with just digits and dogs. The speech bubbles are multicolored, so toddlers intuitively know to tap them to elicit the sound effects.
In A Nutshell-
Mars Counts To 10 will appeal to young children because of the focus on dogs and barking. The pages are very simple, and probably not going to hold the interest of children much over the preschool age. As a teaching tool, the book definitely covers the introduction of basic numbers.
