App for iOS - iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch and Android devices
Alex misses his grandmother. He asks his Father how far away she lives and discovers that it would take 15 days by car and more than a year on foot. That's simply too long! The obvious answer is to fly, but poor Granny is afraid of flying. Alex's Mum suggests they bake her some Chocolate Courage Cookies, which they box up and send to her. The positive effect of the family's influence (plus the cookies) helps Granny overcome her fears, so she starts packing her suitcase. In the end, the family members are reunited, all thanks to Alex and his wish to see his grandmother.

How the App Works-
A Parcel of Courage by Moona Group is available in the App Store (for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch) and on Google Play (for Android devices). It was developed by Mariya Stavinskaya, and can be played with either a British English or Russian translation. It has two different settings, an "I Listen" setting that provides professional narration and an "I Read" setting that does not. The mini-games are accessed through the "I Play" button on the Home screen. The page turning arrows are located in the bottom right and left corners; they are designed to be tapped twice, so that a child can't accidentally turn the page.
The four mini-games (unique educational games based on two proven teaching methods: Montessori method and Shichida method. include some skills not typically seen. They are:
- Restaurant- a game for matching quantities and numbers 1-5
- Post Office- a pattern game using postage stamps
- Suitcase- a spatial relations game for fitting objects inside the suitcase
- Mandala- a design matching game
What Fun Educational Apps Liked-
The pages in A Parcel of Courage are panoramic; this makes it possible to scroll back and forth to get a wider view of the page. Throughout the story are activities and animations that relate directly to the storyline. It might be Alex waking up his brothers with a marble run or Mum making the cookies with the children or Grandpa shoveling snow. These activities make the story more interesting and give it some depth.
In A Nutshell-
A Parcel of Courage combines an interactive story, featuring characters that talk, with four mini-games that are interesting and well-designed. It also has a social/emotional theme (the importance of connecting with family) that is important to discuss with children. Overall, it provides an enjoyable experience for both parent and child.
