There has been a revolution in the last generation regarding the way parents explain sensitive topics like conception and birth to their children. Although many books are available on this subject, we think you will find Clementine's new app (designed for children 5-12 years old) to be far superior to them because it’s written from a child’s point of view and it uses simple animations to explain key concepts.
Clementine Wants to Know…Where Do Babies Come From? is available in the App Store and on Google Play. The app was developed by Puddle Tap Publishing.
Have a look:
Clementine is a precocious and inquisitive 6 year old, who has just learned that she is about to become a big sister. Her fear and anxiety stems from the fact that she doesn’t know much about how babies get born.
Clementine Wants to Know…Where Do Babies Come From? provides straightforward information (“ A baby grows inside his mother’s uterus for nine months.”) along with animations that illustrate answers to Clementine's specific questions (“How does the baby come out?”). There is no shying away from correct labels or private information. Most importantly, she gets the basic facts without shame or embarrassment. Instead, the message she gets is this: “Birth is a natural part of life, and we want to share it with you.” This is the same message parents want to convey.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked-
There is a lot to like about Clementine Wants to Know…Where Do Babies Come From?
- It allows children to hear the correct names for reproductive organs.
- It de-mystifies the processes of conception, gestation, and birth.
- It provides common language for parents to use when discussing the subject with their children.
- It reassures children that their place in the family is secure and important.
- It includes an explanation (included separately at the end) of some alternative methods families use to have children, including surrogacy, adoption, and donor insemination.
The information presented in this app was compiled by Meg Hickling, R.N., an author and reproductive educator with many years of experience. She shares additional insights with parents at the end of the app. The more confident parents are when talking about sex with their children, the healthier their children’s attitudes will be. When the time comes for your child to learn where babies come from, remember Clementine's app- it will guide your discussion beautifully.
