Learning the principles of math is so much more than just calculation. KidsCalculate Math Basics is a brand new app that uses the Montessori methods of exploration, visualization, and practice to teach children (ages 4 to 9) mathematical concepts that are the foundation of all quantitative reasoning. Its step by step approach and its comprehensive content earn it a Top Pick for us at Fun Educational Apps.
KidsCalculate Math Basics, by Marius Versteegen, is available for IOS and Android devices (including iPad2 or later). The developer has included lots of options that allow parents and teachers to customize a program for each child; even more important is the fact that performance data is automatically saved. This makes it easy to see how your child is progressing. The app also provides practice in learning numbers in nine different languages (English, German, Japanese, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, Chinese, and Dutch) if that is a consideration.
Have a look:
The activities start easy and advance to more difficult concepts; at each level, short explanations are provided that demonstrate how to play. These are the skills that are covered in the app:
- Match the number to the pile of blocks (counting)
- Put the blocks into groups of ten (place value)
- Compare groups of blocks (more and less)
- Add the smaller pile to the larger pile (addition)
- Move blocks from one pile to the other pile (subtraction)
- Multiply (using 1,2,5, and 10)
- Super speed (calculate with a time limit)
At first, children are able to move the blocks back and forth to help them see how to create and compare the number sets. At the advanced level, the blocks are frozen in place, requiring that children visualize the steps in their minds. This may seem like a small difference, but for children, the ability to go from manipulation to visualization is the foundation of real learning.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked-
From a educational standpoint, KidsCalculate Math Basics exceeds expectations. As a matter of fact, the app has so much content that it may seem overwhelming to parents. My best advice is to concentrate on the basic levels first. Once your child has mastered counting and place value, you will have a better understanding of how the app is set up, and you will be able to guide your child if he or she gets stuck. Another quick tip: spend time observing your child learning about numbers. It is a rewarding experience for both of you.
KidsCalculate Math Basics gives your child lots of practice creating, comparing, and rearranging number sets. It is a solid, well-designed app that helps develop competence and confidence in math. For these reasons, Fun Educational Apps awarded it a Top Pick in the category of primary level math apps .
