Digital magazines for children are gaining in popularity. While many of these publications are geared toward older children, Theo&Julia Children's Magazine has content that is designed especially for children 3-8 years old. It makes a smart choice for busy parents who can't spend hours in the App Store reading app reviews.
Theo&Julia Children's Magazine is the latest venture from Ebooks&kids. This developer already has a large library of preschool readiness apps, including the popular Wee Kids series, which we have reviewed previously (Wee Kids Math, ABC, and Sticker). Theo&Julia Children's Magazine represents a new opportunity for them to create a nice selection of educational games and activities and offer new content to their subscribers each month.
Have a look:
The first issue is available for free, so parents can check out the contents; additional issues are available monthly through in-app purchases (IAP). Languages available: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Spanish
The magazine's main characters, Theo and Julia, represent children with different interests. Theo is the reader and the artist; Julia is the dreamer and the musician. Together they provide 12-14 skill-building activities per issue. Two of the features are always included-Letter of the Month and Play with Numbers. The rest vary from month to month. In the inaugural issue, the following activities are represented:
- a coloring page (with a digital paint brush)
- a "find the hidden objects" picture
- a digital dot to dot
- a tip and tilt maze
- a memory game (with different grid sizes (2X3, 3X4, 4X5)
- a digital keyboard for creative musical play
- a puzzle (with 3 levels of difficulty)
- a digital sticker picture
Parents and children alike will find the user interface easy to navigate. It is possible to scroll back and forth between the icons and select the activity you want to play. Games are short, typically 1-5 minutes, and can be played again and again.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked-
Theo&Julia Children's Magazine uses the same bold colors, excellent graphics, upbeat music, and clever animations that we have come to expect from Ebooks&kids. The themes around which they design their learning games are ones that have universal appeal to preschoolers, namely the ocean, animals, robots, aliens, and food. All of the content is designed to be appropriate for your children, and the activities are geared to their level of ability. Frankly, if your plan is to purchase only one readiness app a month, Theo&Julia could take care of your purchases for the entire year. Theo&Julia Children's Magazine offers consistently good quality activities and games that will improve your child's readiness skills.
There is a mission statement from the developer located on the Parents' Page. It describes what they see as their purpose in creating Theo&Julia Children's Magazine. It is thoughtfully written and worth your time to read it.
