Monki Birthday Party by Monkimun is a cute preschool app that focuses on early readiness skills like shape identification, size comparison, colors, and counting. The app also requires children to listen to and follow simple directions to move from activity to activity. Users join Cowy and her friends at her birthday party. Players must decorate for the party by stringing colored shapes on a banner, counting candles on a cake, identifying shapes from a piñata, and putting the correct sized birthday hat on each character.
Have a look:
Each activity has bright graphics, silly animations, sound effects, and narrated directions, prompts, and praise. The app's narration is consistent and reinforcing. Children are prompted to follow directions and are praised each and every time they are successful. Incorrect attempts are met with positive redirection.
To decorate the cake, children must choose a favorite dessert and add candles one by one as they are counted. To feed snacks to the friends, users must first touch the correct shape on the piñata to open the toy. After the sweets fall out, follow directions to feed the correct shaped candies to each friend. Children must also listen to directions and select the big or small hat that each character wants to wear. While decorating for the party, players choose shapes and colors to string on a banner.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
Monki Birthday Party is a super cute app that toddlers and preschoolers will easily be engaged in. It is full of silly animations and sound effects that grab the attention of children in that age range. The readiness skills covered are also quite appropriate. I liked the extra details the developers added to each game.
For instance, trying to put the wrong hat on a character makes the character move around the page avoiding the hat. Also, children can set the piñata to swinging by moving the iPad and they actually blow out the candles on the cake by blowing into the microphone. These little additions make this app stand out among it's preschool app peers. The only mini-game I didn’t enjoy was decorating for the party. It didn't have clear directions or purpose. Children are free to put anything they want on the banner, which encourages free exploration. However, as a mom, I'd prefer some direction for my child. I'd love to see that turned into a color identification or pattern generating activity.
Overall, Monki Birthday Party is a cute preschool app with bright action and graphics and a focus on preschool readiness skills. Toddlers and preschool age children will definitely enjoy preparing for the birthday party.
