Did you know that a sword fish can swim up to 62 miles per hour? Or, that a snail has teeth? Explorium- Ocean for Kids combines a kid-friendly encyclopedia about ocean plants and animals, an undersea adventure, and six mini-games. With so many different activities, it will keep your child (ages 4 to 8) entertained for hours. We like this app so much that we made it our latest Top Pick for Fun Educational Apps.
Have a look:
The opening screen sets the stage for one of the main characters, Alex or Alice (you get to choose), to go on a deep sea adventure in search of the lost city of Atlantis. As the character goes deeper and deeper, he/she encounters many different species of plants and animals, some familiar and some not. Clicking on the object causes a fact to pop up, and your child can read along as the voiceover shares the information.
Also hidden among the coral and the seaweed are treasure chests, which open up to reveal mini-games, including: a jellyfish maze, a memory game, a match game, a bubble popping game, and a sticker page. These games develop memory and motor skills besides being lots of fun. Each completed game earns your child a piece of the map of Atlantis. The object of the game is to complete the puzzle to find the lost city.
Explorium- Ocean for Kids requires no verbal instructions because all of the movements are indicated by blinking arrows. This makes the app easy to use, even for non-readers. A few demonstration clicks from a parent, and your child can manage the game independently.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked-
Explorium- Ocean for Kids is another quality app from Puppet Life. I have also reviewed two of their previous apps (Say Goodnight and Sailing Home- Learn Animal Habitats), and I am happy to report that all of them show the same appreciation for the subject matter and attention to detail. The underwater graphics here are extremely well-done, and exceed expectations. I also appreciate the fact that the app accurately shows the inhabitants in each of the different layers of the ocean (the sunlight zone, the twilight zone, and the midnight zone). For all of these reasons, Fun Educational Apps names Explorium- Ocean for Kids one of its Top Picks in the category of science and nature apps.
At the time of this review, Explorium- Ocean for Kids contains no ads or in-app purchases. The only external link is to the iTunes store to show the other Puppet Life apps, accessible only from a protected parent portal. Parents can be confident that their children’s privacy is protected when using this app.
