Welcome to the swamp. It may seem like a quiet, calm place, but beware- the gator is lurking just beneath the surface of the water, ready to strike. The Swamp Where Gator Hides is a well written story app for children ages 6-8, which describes life in the swamp and highlights the abundance of animals living there. Its unique style and solid design elevate it to the level of a Top Pick for Fun Educational Apps.
Have a look:
The Swamp Where Gator Hides opens peacefully; the only hint of what’s to come is a large set of reptilian eyes that stare out from under a layer of algae. One by one, the animals are added to the scene. Finally, the calm is shattered when the gator leaps out of the water, trying to catch its prey.
Following the story are descriptions of the animals that are not too simple, but not overwhelming, either. The premise of the Gator Game is that the animals must move quickly or they will become lunch for the gator. Wherever he pops up, your child must move that animal out of reach of the gator’s fierce jaws. Will it get away, or will it become lunch?
What Fun Educational Apps Liked-
The Swamp Where Gator Hides is a great example of how developers can combine different elements successfully into one app. There is richness to the vocabulary, and it is used in a cumulative fashion, much like “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt” and “There Was an old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly”. Here is a sample from the story: “This is the turtle who takes a snooze/ ignoring the duck who paddles in ooze/ under the algae that carpets the swamp/ where gator hides. “
The interactive elements are easy to find and activate. Some of them are really outstanding; for example, when the gator lunges out of the water, the effect is startling. Bugs crawl around, and the turtle pops his head in and out of his shell. Even the grass and the cattails sway in the breeze. My one suggestion would be to add a background audio track with music or subtle sound effects to help create the mood.
The Swamp Where Gator Hides has enough factual information about the swamp habitat to appeal to junior scientists. It also has an intelligently written story with realistic illustrations. Finally, it includes an activity that serves a purpose in the context of the story. All of the parts are integrated and provide an enjoyable learning experience. We think your child will enjoy The Swamp Where Gator Hides; it’s our latest Top Pick at Fun Educational Apps.
