Grandpa in Space is the newest addition to the Fairlady Media's Grandma and Grandpa Collection. It is a great game developed for six to eight years olds, with a focus on outer space fun. Kids travel from planet to planet while practicing a variety of math and language skills.
Grandpa in Space is a great learning app for kids in kindergarten through second grade. Each blastoff into space is a unique learning adventure. Children build their own rocket ship as they prepare to join Grandpa on an intergalactic journey. After choosing a planetary destination, children get to learn facts about each planet and then watch a really cool video from the space station. Children get to watch astronauts in action. In addition to the video about astronauts, children also are rewarded with a video about each planet filled with facts.
Have a look:
During each flight to the various planets, users play different games to pass the time. Games deal with both math and language skills. Children must match opposites, identify rhyming words, match aliens, sort heights, practice addition, identify shapes, count by tens, put puzzles together, and sort objects. The games are quick and users play three mini-games on each journey. After finding a planet, players return home to blast off again.
Parents can control which games they want their children to practice in the settings menu. After disengaging the parent gate, each mini-game can be toggled to customize what a child practices. With ten mini-games and eighteen videos from space, kids have a lot to explore.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
This app has a lot of educational value and is very well done. This series of apps really knows how to engage kids. Kids jump into the game by creating their own rocket ship. With non-linear game play, users get to choose their own destination. This is another way of keeping kids engaged in learning.
The learning activities are great. I like the balance between math and language arts. The word games use words from first and second grade. However, tapping on each UFO or planet will play the word aloud - allowing nonreaders to hone their language skills. For me, the opposites game was one of the best. The math games are a little easier than first grade. I also really like the videos about the planets and especially the ones from the space station.
Outer space is a highly engaging subject for kids, and Grandpa in Space capitalizes on this. My only wish would be to have the alien games be a little bit longer. I'd love to see each mini-game have two or three rounds to increase the skill practice.
