Here at Fun Educational Apps, we have noticed an increase in the number of high quality story apps that have been submitted for review. The latest one is Drew Meets Boo, an interactive story app for children who enjoy vibrant colors and lots of animation. With references to the circus, trains, the beach, and snowball fights, there’s something of interest for every child, and parents will appreciate the underlying lesson about self-esteem that is embedded in the story.
Drew Meets Boo is a new story app by Charter Road Productions for all iOS devices - iPad/iPhone/iPod. The author, Justine Danielle Del Monte, also wrote Drew’s Dancing Drum, the first app in the series. (If you look carefully, you will be able to find Drew’s drum featured on many of the pages.) Like Drew’s Dancing Drum, this story is written in short rhyming verses, using language that children can understand. The style of the illustrations is similar to a comic book or a graphic novel, making it appealing to a large audience. The background music and the sound effects add to the overall experience, but if you choose, they can be turned off. The narration is activated by touching the words on the page; you get to decide whether you want it or not.
In the story, Drew meets a new friend, Boo, who impresses him with her friendliness and her self-confidence. Even when targeted by bullies, Boo is able to stand her ground and ignore their teasing. She is a role model who shows Drew how to disengage from put downs and focus instead on things that are positive and fun, like playing with her friends in the snow or in the sand.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked-
Drew Meets Boo has an underlying message that is extremely important. However, it doesn’t take itself too seriously, judging by the amount of fun the characters are having. If your child has ever complained because there wasn't enough animation in an app, this is definitely one for you to consider! The developer has made a conscious effort to make every object on the screen interactive. It’s like having a whole bag full of candy instead of just a few pieces!
The description of Drew Meets Boo in the App Store gives an age range of 0-5, but I think it might also be well-suited to somewhat older children who are going to be faced with similar challenges, maybe starting a new school year or changing schools. The ability to make friends and get along with others are extremely important factors for a child’s overall adjustment and success in school. I think this is a wonderful way to encourage that positive outlook.
