Curious George and the Firefighters by iRead With is a brand new app from favorite developer Tribal Nova. This app adapts a true classic into a digital learning experience. The familiar paperback story has gotten a face life and a whole bunch of new interactions to make it an engaging activity for this generation's young learners.
Have a look:
The original story of Curious George and the Firefighters is brought to life by a few really neat tricks. The storyline and pictures remain mostly unchanged throughout the story. The app features standard tap to play animations and interactions found in many digital storybooks. There are several unique features that stand out though.
The app is built to be a collaborative learning experience for parents and children. Begin by personalizing your avatars. Then work together to record yourselves reading the living words. These are important words from the story, that when touched, come to life. Hear your own voice read the living words aloud and watch as the living words come to life within the illustrations. Another unique feature is the shared reading experience. Watch the parent avatar for story questions to engage your child in comprehension questions about the tale. Your child can watch his avatar for hints if he gets stuck with a question.
The Settings menu allows parents to adjust the level of questions posed by the avatar, depending on how well the child is doing. At the end of each of the three levels, users earn 5 puppets to use to build scenes in the Theatre menu. Place and position pieces to retell the story. The app also features the standard Listen option, where children can listen to and interact with the digital elements, without the parent participation portion.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
This is a great way for parents and children to sit down together and truly engage in a story. Don't get me wrong, reading aloud is great, but this app takes it to a teaching level. I love that the avatars are customized to be parent and child. I also really like that the questions can be adjusted to the child's level. I think this is a great way for parents to double as teachers as they read with their children. The ability to record yourself reading the living words is a nice twist as well. The developers have done a great job of truly bringing the words to life. Even the Theatre section was well thought out. By unlocking characters through reading the story, the developer ensures that kids are truly reading, and not just playing. The fact that the props switch direction and size relative to their position in theatre is a really well done aspect as well.
Overall, Curious George and the Firefighters by iRead With is way more than just a digital book. It's a collaborative learning experience that parents and children can both enjoy. The features of this app are unique and easy to use. I love seeing this traditional story get revamped for the next generation.
