Times have changed. Tablets and readers are becoming the preferred mode of access for pleasure reading as well as instructional reading. Epic! is an ebook subscription service specifically designed for children up to age 12, which offers immediate access to over 3500 book titles. Epic! earns a Top Pick from Fun Educational Apps for providing its subscribers with a well-designed, easy-to-use children’s library that’s just a click away.
Have a look:
The first step is to set up a profile for each child who will be using Epic! Each subscription allows for up to four profiles to be created. The only information necessary for the profile is a username and an age. Once completed, children and parents can begin to browse the collection. Books in Epic! are categorized in two ways, by genre and by age level. The specific genres vary slightly by age, but generally include: non-fiction, picture books, animals, machines and building, nature, sports, humor, fun facts, fiction, adventure, fantasy, mystery, activity, and comics/graphic novels. The age levels are divided into 4 & under, 5-7, 8-10, and 11-12.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked-
iPads are revolutionizing how people access books. Children are starting to use the iPad for pleasure reading as well as gaming, thanks to online libraries and subscription services like Epic! Its pages are bright and colorful and the text is easy-to-read (especially when using the Zoom feature). Parents will also appreciate the ability to keep track of which books their children are reading, and how much time they are spending on reading by viewing each child’s profile. Another nice feature is the ability to read books off-line when no wi-fi connection is available.
Epic! does not offer some of the most popular, in-demand titles. I also found that there is no “search” feature or catalog available, making it more difficult to find a particular title. Parents need to consider the cost before signing up with Epic!, because it is at the upper end of the app price range. That fee, however, is less than the cost of purchasing one hardcover children’s book a month, and in exchange, your child has access to thousands of titles, with no due dates and no overdue fines. At Fun Educational Apps, we named Epic! a Top Pick because we think parents will find it is an easy and efficient way to provide a constant supply of age appropriate books for their children to read.
