Tappy Alphabet by TaqTeq is a simple app that is based on a tap and reveal basis. Geared toward toddlers and preschoolers, the app focuses on letters and words beginning with that letter. The screen opens to all 26 letters laid out in colorful blocks very reminiscent of wooden alphabet blocks. Players simply tap the letter to reveal a picture and word beginning with that letter. Each letter can be tapped 4 times to reveal four different vocabulary words. The blocks remain turned up as the user taps on other letters.
After tapping the letter, a female narrator says the letter and then the word associated with the image. Tapping the picture again repeats the letter and then a new word and picture are narrated. The images are small and appropriate for young children. As children tap on different letters, the other blocks remain turned up unless the user taps the reset bar at the bottom to flip everything back over. Additionally, the sound can be turned off so that higher level kids can flip the blocks and read or state the object without prompting.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
This app is very easy to use. There isn’t even a menu for children to get lost in. Upon opening, players can immediately dive into the experience by tapping on letters. I liked that the app has four words for each letter. This gives children multiple exposures to words beginning with that letter. I also like that the narrator repeats the letter each time a word is shown for additional reinforcement. The words are engaging for young children and all will be easily recognized, save for a few like Quince or Xebec – but come on, X words are hard to come by! Even if you didn’t know that a Xebec is a style of ship, the picture that goes along with it is a great visual aide.
Overall, Tappy Alphabet is a nice way for young children to expand their vocabulary and associate words with beginning letter sounds. The colorful alphabet block layout is easy to navigate and early learners enjoy the tap and reveal aspect of the app.
Tappy Alphabet is availabe for downlaod via the iTunes App Store for iPad devices and Google Play for Android devices.
