My Parents are Crazy is a nice storybook app that kids can relate to. Okay, maybe your parents aren’t going sky-diving or having food fights, but some days it might feel like it. This app is a fun story that children can read or listen to, and even participate in.
My Parents are Crazy by Confidence Through Characters, Inc is a standard interactive book app. The storyline is fun and engaging and will appeal to children. Join Billy as he wakes to find that his parents have gone a little crazy. Everything in Billy’s world is topsy-turvy as his mom and dad come up with the most outlandish answers and activities possible. From ice cream sundaes for breakfast and the resulting food fight, to skipping school to go sky-diving, Billy’s parents just don’t seem the same.
The menu of the app allows users to adjust the options to suit their needs. Choose to toggle the text, highlight the words as they are read, have the story read aloud, or adjust the ambient sounds throughout the story. Once you begin the story, users must tap a small red arrow under the text box to move to the next bit of story. Each scene has several text and dialogue boxes to go through. Advance to the next page by clicking on the arrows in the top right-hand corner. Interactive components of the app flash if readers can manipulate them. For instance, readers can make their own sundaes and participate in the food fight. The rest of the scene is not interactive.
One last component of the app is the Learn page. Here, children can review 20 flashcards with words from the story. Twenty vocabulary words relevant to the story are listed on cards with an accompanying image. The cards are not interactive, just words associated with the text.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
This app has a plot that young readers will find funny and engaging. Its silly antics will appeal to children from age 5 to around age 8. I like that the app has the read aloud option set as standard, but it can be toggled so that higher level readers can read the story themselves. I also like that the text is highlighted as a student listens to it. This provides reinforcement as the student uses the app. The graphics are bright with stop motion like animation of the characters. Tapping on the little red arrow was a little bit redundant; I would love to see an auto-play option added so that users only need to navigate the page turn.
Overall, My Parents are Crazy is a cute storybook app with a few interactions and customizable read aloud options. Young readers will enjoy the idea that sometimes parents really are crazy.
