EhonKids joins the digital book world with All-You-Can-Read! World's picture books at your fingertips! “EhonKids” a subscription based app. This app features a variety of tales from around the world, laid out in video form, to engage children from age 2-8. With a selection of free books and a trial period, you can get a feel for the app before subscribing.
Ehon means picture book in Japanese. Knowing this makes the app’s name very appropriate. All-You-Can-Read! World's picture books at your fingertips! “EhonKids” by MOONBEAMS is an app that features about 20 different stories from around the world. Favorites from Grimm and Aesop, folktales from other countries, and modern stories fill the book shelf. Besides the English versions of the tale, there are also foreign language versions as well. At the time of this review, there is a five day trial period where users can access all of the stories. After the trial period, five stories remain free, with the rest available on a subscription basis. The developer plans to release five new stories a month.
The stories are played in a movie-like fashion, with options for customization. Parents can adjust the setting to display the words, turn off the read aloud, or turn off the music. In this menu area, you can also select a page if you need to restart the story someplace other than the beginning. Since the story plays as a movie there is no page advancement or interactive features. The title page of the story shows the running time of the story. The website boasts that the app works well with AppleTV and can be mirrored to be viewed on your television.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
The layout of this app is very organized. The stories are displayed on bookshelves that can be sorted. Users can tap the number in the corner to view all of the stories, new stories, downloaded stories, global fairy tales, modern tales, and free texts. The stories themselves are a good mix of familiar tales and new stories. I liked having some different stories from around the world. They might be fun to use in a global folktale lesson. While I didn’t try it out, I also like that the app will play on the TV. This might be a way to give children something educational to watch while you prepare dinner. When you open each story, it tells you the running time, so parents can plan accordingly. I loved that aspect. Just so that parents are aware, the download time was a bit slow, as was the load time for the options at the bottom in the parent menu.
Overall, EhonKids offers a nice selection of stories built to engage children in a television format. The app has a trial period and some free books, but is subscription based after this period.
