Spelling Ninjas: HF is a fun spelling game that not only offers 300 different words, but also gives children a variety of ways to practice spelling. Children select either the First 100 Words (10 lists), or Medium Frequency Words (20 lists). Word lists begin with common Kindergarten sight words and move to about a second grade level. In the Learn mode, children choose a spelling list and practice tracing the alphabet, in cursive. Each word is also spoken aloud. The tracing portion is not monitored for correct letter formation.
The Practice mode has six games for children to play. Slice It asks students to listen to a word, then slice all of the crates that have the wrong words. Silent Search is a word search where students slice the hidden words from the list. Speed Pop has users listen to a word then pop the bubbles that contain the word. Seeker asks students to chop down the incorrect spellings of a given word. Master Quiz is the final test, asking students to type the spelling words correctly.
Spelling Ninjas: HF by Hannah Macfadyen capitalizes on the swiping popularity that is raging through the App Store. The variety of games keeps kids engaged and playing with words in different ways. I appreciated that children didn't just have to find spelling words, but instead had to identify incorrect spellings, different words, and spell the words themselves. I also really liked how many words there were. With each list limited to ten words, this app makes spelling manageable. For teachers, the ability to add up to 10 users is great.
There were a few notes I need to make: First, the dictation of the spelling words is often soft and not always easy to understand. Even as an adult I had to replay certain words to figure out what I needed to do. Additionally, with the level of words being kindergarten to second grade, tracing in cursive isn't all that practical. Children often don't use cursive any more, and normally not before third grade in the States. Tracing the printed words would be more appropriate for this age group.
Overall, Spelling Ninjas: HF is a fun way to practice spelling and basic sight words. With six different games, and a hidden game once you get 20 stars, there are plenty of activities to do and tons of words to practice. With a few tweaks, this would be great for teachers looking for a learning station.
