Say Goodnight, a new app for all IOS devices by Puppet Life, opens onto a view of the night sky as the sun is gradually replaced by the moon. There is a panoramic background which includes three separate areas; children are encouraged to slide back and forth between the forest, the house, and the barn, since there is no particular order for finding the sleepy animals.
Have a look:
Here is a hint: each one is hiding near a softly glowing light. Touch the light and the animal appears. After petting the animal and rocking the tablet or phone gently back and forth, its eyelids start to flutter, and before you know it, it is sound asleep. Next, the purple arrow in the lower right corner appears, and it’s time to find another creature. The pacing here is relaxed, so there’s plenty of time to linger on each page. Finally, your attention becomes focused on the last light on in the house, which is in the little boy’s bedroom. He, too, must get ready for bed, and with your child’s help, he picks up his toys, washes his face, brushes his teeth, and crawls into his bed.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked-
Parents who appreciate subtle design elements will love the layout of this app. Each page has been beautifully created with attention to detail. The background is mostly muted shades of blues and purples, and there is a wonderful shadow effect around the edge of each page, giving it a cozy nighttime feeling. Twelve different animals are hidden in the scenery, including a squirrel, a mouse, a cat, a dog, a pig, and a hen. With so many different animals, it takes a while to find them all.
One suggestion I would make would be to have a HOME button available on each page. It would be nice to have the option to stop, start over, or quit the app at any point. Also, I think some of the animations (especially when the little boy is getting ready for bed) are awkward and choppy.
If your little one likes to snuggle with a good story app before bed, Say Goodnight is definitely one you should consider. It has a comforting, quieting feel that is exactly what a parent wants just before bedtime.
