Nouns with Spelling Test Practice : 500+ Noun flash cards for Preschool to 2nd Grade kids learn to spell by eFlashApps is a basic spelling review app that is easy to use and is independently accessible for children. Children aged 4 – 8 already have built in word lists. However, you can add your own words lists, making this usable for any grade level in need of spelling practice. Users can practice the word lists or take spelling tests, complete with results report.
This app focuses on nouns, so each spelling list from preschool to second grade focuses on nouns only. There are more than 500 words available to practice, with the added bonus of adding your own lists. Parents and teachers begin by adding user accounts for each child. These can be customized to show which ever lists are most appropriate.
If a user taps the spelling list name, they automatically begin a practice session. Here students see a word, hear the word, and see a picture clue. A microphone option allows the user to record their voice reading the word. A light bulb toggles the picture clue. These options are also available in the settings menu, making the practice session as easy or as challenging as needed.
The spelling test option allows users to choose which list they want to test, the level, and the number of questions. The easy level has letter blanks, and one letter showing. The medium level takes away the hint letter and adds a timer. The Hard level has no blanks and lets children free type their answers. Each word is stated allowed and users must type the correct spelling of the word. A results page at the end lets an adult flag misspelled words for later practice and gives a mastery report that can be used for progress monitoring.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
By far, my favorite feature of this app is the ability to customize my own spelling lists. I was able to create a list of my son’s popcorn words for him to practice spelling. He loved it because we recorded his voice saying each word. There is also an option for adding pictures for each word. I liked that each of the preloaded lists could be customized. I also like the option to shut off voice or pictures to make the task more challenging. The ability to add users and generate data also was a nice perk for the teacher in me. One thing I’m hoping to see in future updates is a parent lock on some of the customization tools. All of the settings can be changed by anyone, not just parents or teachers. I'd also love to see an option to shut off the timer. My son is perfectly capable of level 3, but he can't find the letters fast enough in free type! Additionally, the app was a little buggy. I ended up having to delete my first user because every time I clicked on him, the app would completely close. After deleting that user and creating a new one, the app worked fine.
Overall, Nouns with Spelling Test is a nice spelling review app. Parents looking for an independent study app for their child will be pleased with the customization options available.
