Dabby Dill & the Hiccup Pickle was developed by Pickled Productions for the iPad. It has the features parents have come to expect in high quality storybook apps. There are three options to accommodate different age levels, including Story Mode (the narrator reads the entire story), Read Along (the narrator reads at a slightly slower pace and the words are underlined as they are read), and Self Read (for independent reading). This story is also available as a non-interactive ebook on Amazon.
Have a Look:
The main character, Dabby Dill, is like other children. She has friends, toys, a family, and a dog, but, she also has the hiccups. Not the two minute, cute-as-a-button variety, but the unrelenting, loud, annoying kind of hiccups. “I’m in a real pickle,” she exclaims. She finds that everyone, including her daddy, her best friend Emma, and her grandma, all have suggestions for getting rid of those bothersome hiccups, but none of them works, until Auntie NaNa steps in and saves the day.
As an added bonus, there is a memory game included in the app, separate from the story. There are also some pop-up surprises hidden on the pages, just waiting to be discovered. For example, one of the pop-ups links to a song, and another links to a recipe for pickles.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked-
Dabby Dill & the Hiccup Pickle reminds me of the old Berenstain Bears stories, which always used a real life problem or event as its theme. As silly as it may seem to adults, children will relate to Dabby Dill’s fear of never being rid of those pesky hiccups. “What if they never go away? What if I have the hiccups FOR-EVER?” she cries. This story also includes a prominent father figure, who is both nurturing and caring. The father/daughter bond is often overlooked in children’s stories, but it is a powerful factor in their social development, so I like to see it represented.
Overall, Dabby Dill & the Hiccup Pickle meets expectations for story content that is age appropriate, artwork that is detailed, bright, and vibrant, and animations that enrich the story experience. It’s a story app that your child is sure to return to again and again.
