Practicing times tables is often a boring, monotonous exercise in memorization. Anything that breaks up that boring task is a welcome change. Bubble Pop Multiplication by Mathsframe is an arcade game reminiscent of the old Snood style games. Players launch multiples at bubbles to equal a given product. After choosing which multiplication tables they want to focus on, users enter the first level. A product is shown at the top, with a bubble at the bottom with a given multiple (focused on the tables selected to practice). Hanging from the tops are groups of bubbles with numbers in the them. Players must launch the bottom bubble at the dangling numbers that, when multiplied together, will equal the product at the top.
Each of the 70 levels is different. The patterns and designs of dangling bubbles become trickier the farther you get in the app. At first the groups of bubbles that are shot are huge, with players needing to only shoot a few bubbles to win. Harder levels involve bouncing bubbles off the walls and ricocheting them up into the configuration. Be careful though, is you miss, the bubbles attach themselves and become part of puzzle. Another nice teaching aspect is the number line. For students working on understanding multiplication, a number line can be toggled on or off showing a visual representation of each multiplication fact.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
I was a huge fan of the old Snood game, so the fact that I enjoyed Bubble Pop Multiplication is no surprise. I get slightly addicted to the launching and bouncing of bubbles and trying to clear the level in the least amount of moves possible. Each level has a limit as well, sometimes it is a limited amount of bubbles, other times it's a time limit. This is just an added challenge to the game. As a teacher, I appreciate that players get to choose between 2-12 times tables before they begin, allowing for individual customization. This way, students can practice the tables they have the most trouble with.
Overall, Bubble Pop Multiplication is a fun way to practice multiplication facts. The arcade game style, bouncing bubbles, and ricocheting aspect will hook kids and trick them into, gasp! actually having fun while they work on their times tables. With the ability to choose which levels to work on, this app lets students focus on the areas they need to practice the most.
