I don't know a child who doesn't enjoy the game of dress up. Baby Owl's Dress Up is a brand new app that makes dress up a digital experience. Children can customize their own little owl in a variety of scenes in this interactive app.
Baby Owl's Dress Up by Hare Squared, LLC lets children customize their own character in an interactive scene. The app is very simple and appropriate for children from age two to five. Meet Baby Owl, a cute little creature with a taste for fun. Join Baby Owl in a wide variety of scenes: a party, stage, desert, farm, castle, camping, firehouse, Hawaii, the beach, circus, outer space, or France. At the time of this review, the free version of the app has the first four scenes with the option to unlock all others via in-app purchase (IAP).
Have a look:
Within each scene, children tap one of the costume menus at the bottom. Choose the hat to select head pieces ranging from wigs to hats to masks. Drag the piece you want to Baby Owl and it automatically sits on his head. The eyeglasses menu has four options for facial pieces. The shirt menu has 23 different outfits to choose from. A British invasion t-shirt, alien costume, and golden bling were among the top choices here. Last choose a prop from the bucket menu.
After dressing up Baby Owl, children can find the hidden interactions within the scene. Tap on tumbleweeds to blow them apart, put out a fire, pop balloons, or star in a rock show. All of the scenes have different things to discover and play with. Also, you can move Baby Owl around the scene as you play. Young children are able to explore with few constraints.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
This app is definitely appropriate for the very young. The different costumes are cute and varied, making sure that children with varying tastes will find a costume to identify with. Children can freely mix and match the costume elements, making up their own unique looks. The scenes are also age appropriate, hitting on the places that young children imagine most often (though perhaps a zoo should be added). The interactions are small, but again, appropriate for the very young. I can't say there is much educational value for older kids, but I don't think that is what the developer was going for. If you have a toddler who is into dress-up, this might be a good app to try.
Overall, Baby Owl's Dress Up is a simple app that allows children to explore mixtures of costume elements in scenes familiar to our children. Interacting with the scene elements was fun and toddlers will enjoy eliciting sounds and lights by tapping throughout the picture.
RRP - Free to try with option to unlock all levels via IAP - $1.99/£1.49/€1.79
