Squirt’s Adventure is the first app to be developed by Department of Silly Stuff. It is designed for all IOS and Android devices, and soon will be available for the PC and Mac. Squirt is a cheerful little octopus that is always grinning through his tentacles. He teams up with the good Captain Dungee (a friendly pirate) to search for buried treasure in the vast undersea world.
Have a look:
The purpose of this game is to find and pop bubbles that contain words starting with the letter Captain Dungee calls out. Each time your child correctly identifies a word, he earns golden coins. The more coins he earns, the closer he moves Squirt and Captain Dungee to each of the buried treasures. There are lots of incentives built into Squirt’s Adventure. Earn enough coins, and your child is awarded a special prize that goes into the Treasure Room. Coins can also be used to add stylish headwear to Squirt and the Captain.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked-
Squirt’s Adventure has an intuitive interface that needs no written or spoken directions. This is an important consideration because children who are likely to play this app are non-readers. Just to be clear, this app does not teach beginning sounds, only letters. The difference is that letters can sometimes make multiple sounds, and this can be confusing for some children.
For example, the letter “s” makes the /s/ sound in snake, but it also makes the /sh/ sound in ship. Also, one of the pictures for the letter “k” is knight, even though the “k” is silent. Another concern is that the pacing may be too fast for some children; it’s hard to scan the screen, find the word, recognize it, and decide about the first letter in less than 2 seconds, which is about how long it takes before the word floats away.
Still, Squirt’s Adventure is more motivating than are traditional books and worksheets that introduce beginning letters. It is visually appealing and entertaining to play. It is an app to consider if your child is ready to learn the basics of spelling.
