Preschool Academy by Ebooks&kids is an educational boon for parents and teachers with young learners. Geared toward children aged 2-6, this app covers most of the essential math skills kids at this age need. The app has four different levels for users to explore. Centered around Sweets, Monsters, Robots, and Music, each level has between 5-8 different areas to explore. The experience revolves completely around whichever level was chosen.
After choosing a level, users guide their character around a themed landscape collecting items. In the Sweets level you collect drinks and chefs hats, the Monster collects potions and shakes, the Robot gears and oil. Each level points to where the user must go next: into a monster's brain, into a gingerbread house, etc. Within each place, players engage in a series of different activities revolving around math skills. Each level is replayable and users can access the different points of each level repeatedly once they've been played the first time.
Kids practice many different activities throughout the game. Location and positional words are identified, size is matched and compared, colors and shapes are tested, matching shadows, following mazes, solving puzzles, identifying and tracing letters, as well as observation and recall of details are also topics covered. Each game is centered around the theme and children move quickly through each level.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
This app covers a huge range of early learning skills. I particularly liked the observation questions, just because I've not seen many apps that deal with this. Children are shown pictures and must then find the same picture within a series. I also like how the different skills are interwoven and mixed up so that users don't become bored. Each of the four levels is progressively harder, with tasks becoming more detailed, puzzles have more pieces, and matching games rely on higher levels of detail recall. The attention to keeping within the theme of each level is great as well. Puzzles, characters, images, even sound effects are all within the scope of the theme. The app is a little bit slow from game to game, what with the celebratory confetti falling, but tapping the arrow will progress users faster. The levels are locked until a user plays them the first time, but after that, the app is freely explorable.
Overall, Preschool Academy is a large and well developed app. It earned a Top Pick because of the depth of skills and the wide range of activities for young learners to practice. The themed activities are engaging for young children and parents will be happy with their children practicing essential skills and having fun at the same time.
