US Geography With Flat Stanley HD by developer Flatter World, Inc. is a fun geography game based on the famous character, Flat Stanley. For those of you that are removed from elementary school literature by a few years – Flat Stanley is the character of a very popular series of books written by Jeff Brown. A terrible tragedy befell Stanly one evening. A giant bulletin board fell on him, squishing him while he slept. Stanley has used his new, flatter self to go on many adventures throughout the world.
In US Geography With Flat Stanley HD, Stanley takes on the United States. After a quick tutorial, users choose a region of the country to explore. Stanley appears at the bottom with a letter that tells which state he needs to be delivered to. Users then fling Stanley from a slingshot to various states on the map. When Stanley lands on a state, players must spell the name of the state (it is given) and then tap the state to see images and read facts about the state that Stanley has landed on. If the player misses the correct state, the names of both the state he landed on and the one he was supposed to hit appear. They then disappear and players try again.
If players are looking for more of challenge, they can play the delivery game as a whole country map, instead of by region. Simply aim and shoot for the correct states. After children finish each section, a score and the time it took to complete the section are displayed, giving parents and teachers an idea of how the students are doing on American geography.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
This is an easy to use geography app capitalizing on the familiar popularity of Flat Stanley. The slingshot aspect is a la Angry Birds and will engage children immediately – who doesn’t love a good slingshot? I very much appreciate that as the user aims the slingshot a dotted line appears and the state that the slingshot is pointed to is highlighted. This made aiming quite a bit easier. The facts and images are high quality and each have Stanley superimposed over them. Children will see the flag, state bird, and other interesting sites from the state. There is a brief description below each image as well. The descriptions are written and not narrated though – this makes the app harder for young readers or low readers to use. I would love to see an option for narration added to the app! I’m also curious to see what else the developers have planned. Flat Stanley has a series of worldwide adventures – will there soon be a Learn the Countries App with Flat Stanley to coincide with the reading series?!
Overall, US Geography With Flat Stanley HD is a fun geography game for children. The familiar character of Flat Stanley, combined with the slingshot action will keep children engaged in learning map skills. With the supplemental images and information, it’s more than just a state identification game.
