Have you seen how many alphabet apps there are in the App Store? A quick search recently registered hundreds of different choices. How can parents possibly sift through all those apps to find one that’s going to meet their expectations? Jamaroos Musical ABCs is a high quality, high interest app that you should consider. It introduces the letters of the alphabet in a fun, completely non-threatening way, using animated characters called Jamaroos playing some very unusual instruments.Fun Educational Apps TOP PICKS
Designed specifically to appeal to young children (ages 2-4), Jamaroos Musical ABCs has been awarded a Top Pick from Fun Educational Apps for its educational value and entertainment potential.
Jamaroos Musical ABCs was developed by Iggy Learning for all IOS and Android devices. The Jamaroos jungle friends are animals with alliterated names like Gat the Gecko, Cop the Camel, Tat the Toucan and Sis the Snake. When Sis takes the stage, she plays her sitar; Gat strums his guitar, and Cop plays his cornet.
The user interface is designed to be intuitive for even a young child- you simply drag a letter up to the stage and the Jamaroo appears, ready to entertain. Also included are additional pictures below the stage that start with the same sound. By touching each picture, the child activates an animation, and the picture tumbles down and bounces around while the word and its beginning sound are presented. The letters can be activated in any order and there is no scoring, time limit, or rules.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked-
There are some very specific criteria I look for in a solid alphabet app.
- First of all, it must use the correct letter sounds. Believe it or not, there are strict rules for pronouncing letter sounds correctly, and some developers don’t follow them.
- Second, it must be easy to use, with hopefully only one or two movements per letter.
- Third, it must use high quality recordings for the sounds. I have seen apps in which the sounds are shortened or badly distorted; that defeats the whole purpose of the app in my opinion.
- Finally, the app must offer something unique to help it stand out.
Jamaroos Musical ABCs meets expectations for technical quality, and it totally exceeds expectations for creativity. The graphics in this app are great, but it’s the jazzy music that I will remember for a long time. Where else can you hear an ostrich play an ocarina or a vulture play a vibraphone?
Once your preschooler meets the Jamaroos, he will fall in love with their crazy antics and fascinating instruments. For those wanting more, there are other Jamaroos apps available in the App Store and Google Play. Fun Educational Apps awards Jamaroos Musical ABCs its latest Top Pick.
