Beginning around age 4, children become social beings. They enjoy interacting with other children as they learn how to develop friendships and engage in meaningful play. The Kiddles is a rhyming story app that shows just how much fun friends can be.
From now until the New Year, ALL of The Kiddles stories are FREE in the app store!
The Kiddles is a digital storybook app intended for children up to age 5. It was developed by Lucas Matheson for IOS devices (iPad, iPhone and iPod touch). It comes with both a Read to Me and a Read by Myself option, with a handy autoplay feature in which the pages advance automatically. The user interface is very intuitive, making it easy for even a young child to listen to the story independently. The app includes the first episode in the Kiddles series. Additional story episodes are available through in-app purchases (IAP).
The Kiddles are a group of cute and cuddly lion cub with alliterated names- Kiddo, Kiddi, Kidda, and Kiddu. In this adventure, entitled “Are You Laughing?” they leave the familiarity of their jungle home and hitch a ride on a gigantic pink bird named Tiny. Tiny flies them up a mountain to discover a brand new experience- snow. They roll and tumble down the hill, much the same way a five year old would slide down a snow-covered hill at the park.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked-
The title says it all- “Are you Laughing?” The actions of The Kiddles mirror those of children this age. There can be joy in everyday adventures that involve time spent with friends. Add to that some fantasy elements (lion cubs catching a ride on a giant bird and taking a trip to the mountains) and you have a recipe for an enjoyable preschool app.
The Kiddles is written in rhyming verse, a feature often seen in this app category. The purpose of using rhyme is to generate a sense of rhythm within the story and to increase predictability in the text. The down side to rhyming is that it forces the author to use wording that feels awkward at times.
Lucas Matheson intentionally created The Kiddles with no animation, no background music, no sound effects, no game activities, and no rewards. His philosophy is that these features distract a child’s attention away from the story. The result is that this app feels to me more like a story on tape than an app. While I agree that limiting distractions may be important for some children, others, including highly visual and tactile learners, learn better when movement and robust visual images are provided. Let your child’s needs guide you when making this decision. Overall, I found The Kiddles to have pleasant, age appropriate content for your preschooler; at $3.99, it is pricier than most story apps in the App Store.
