Mr. Fox and Shapes by Alex Hajdu is a cute preschool app meant to let children play and explore with shapes. With both learning and free play options, children experience shapes in fun ways. There are seven different activities available to explore. Three are fun shape puzzles, a shape picture game, a shape matching activity, a find the missing pieces task, and a musical medley.
The app has no narration or written language at all. Sound effects and characters carry the app. In the first three activities, children build either a pirate ship, circus tent, or spaceship. After dragging shapes to outlines, the scene comes to life with various interactive components. For instance, tip the iPad to make the ship sail from side to side or tap the clown to make him juggle. The Sun activity has children simply drag one shape to an outline. The shape then transforms into a cute familiar object. The Heart activity is a quiz like task. Given an array of empty shapes, match the one colored shape to the right place. The Flower task has children find the missing pieces in a semi-complete shape puzzle. Lastly, kids can explore a musical screen. Tap each shape for a musical sound. Give the iPad a shake to change them up.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
This is a bright and bold app great for very young children. Kids aged 1-4 would find this fun and engaging. The free explore activities let children play with shapes and become familiar with their attributes. By adding the interactive components, the app becomes a fun game. My favorite activity was when kids drag one large shape. I loved that each shape turned into an adorable familiar object. The elephant is just too cute! My only complaint is that this app doesn't actually tell the shape names. Since every activity has the outline of the shape already in place, children simply have to match and drag shapes. I'd love to see a short narration where the name of the shape is stated as children explore. Narration would be great in the Sun and Heart activities. It would add another layer of education to this cute app.
Overall, Mr. Fox and Shapes is a cute preschool app that will engage our youngest learners. The bold colors, fun sound effects, and free exploration make this a great app for children just beginning to recognize shapes.
