Kids on the Road is a new game app from KidFunKit for IOS devices. It puts your child in the driver’s seat of his or her own race car, and allows him to see what it’s like to drive like the pros. The controls for the car are simply two buttons, one on the right and one on the left. It takes a little while to get used to using buttons rather than tilt controls; at first, my child testers kept trying to tilt the tablet, but eventually they figured it out. The Settings in this app include:
- Tour- 10 non-competitive courses of increasing difficulty to drive by yourself
- Grand Prix- 10 competitive races around circuits that get progressively harder
- My track- a chance to design up to 10 circuits of your own
The music is totally optional, but I found it pleasant and fitting with the race theme. There are three levels of difficulty (easy, medium, hard), determined by the speed of the racer. There are also three different locations from which to choose- in the city, at the beach, and out in the countryside. If your child is interested in customizing a course in My Track, I would suggest that a parent help design the first one, because there are some guidelines that must be followed.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked-
Driving down the straightaways and around the corners takes skill, and with each higher level, there are more obstacles and greater challenges. The graphics in this game are quite clever with lots of details. The first level may seem easy, but after that, it gets harder to stay on the track while accelerating. My best suggestion for players is simple: KEEP MOVING. Even if you veer a little off the raceway, keep traveling forward and correct your course.
One of the benefits of technology is that even young children can entertain themselves with games on the iPod or the iPad. Kids on the Road is a simple, fun way to occupy your child while in the car or waiting for an appointment. I don’t advocate letting children play with game apps for long periods of time; however, if it is used judiciously, a game can be a powerful motivator. Remember to keep a time limit and emphasize good sportsmanship.
Overall, Kids on the Road meets expectations for visual design. The controls seem to be sluggish at times and the student testers tended to over-steer often. Still, for children who love car racing, this is an app to consider.
