Zorbit’s Math Adventure Preschool – Learning. Reimagined. by By Best Boy Entertainment is an outer space themed math app for children between the ages of 2 and 5. Users practice a variety of math skills as they help the young alien Zorbit prepare for a trip to planet Earth. Players help Zorbit collect six stars from six different people to power his rocket. Each friend needs help with a particular math skill.
Users begin by helping Zorbit’s mom wake him up. Players must tap and count up to 5 in several different ways to complete the task. At the gumball machine, users recognize numbers and count from 5-10, with each mini game focusing on a different numeral.
Users then help Zorbit’s friend feed her pet. Players count up to 15 and work on concepts like more/less and inside/outside. Players also have to help another friend identify numerals, count spaceships up to 20, and order numbers.
Zorbit’s dad needs help fixing up spaceships. Identify shapes and work on the concepts long/short and wide/narrow as you repair each ship. Lastly, players help to build Zorbit’s ship. By focusing on colors and location words, users add the parts of the spaceship to prepare for launch.
Children are rewarded multiple times in each level with stickers. Completing a task gives users a choice of sticker for their sticker book. The sticker book has four different scenes, each with cumulative sticker collections.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
To begin with, the out-of-this-world theme is very well done. The graphics, characters, sounds, and activities are all top-notch. As both a parent and a teacher, I was really impressed with the variety of concepts the app covers. It starts slow, with basic numbers to five, and at first I was worried that was all the app did. As you move through the game though, the concepts introduced and covered are wide-ranging. I loved the practice my son got on all of those descriptive words: narrow/wide, long/short, right/left/middle, more/less. These are such important concepts and this app did a great job giving practice.
Each level had multiple ways to practice the skills. It wasn’t a quick game and then you’re done; it was a let’s try this several ways kind of experience. The app also guides the player throughout the whole game. After each question, the answer choices are outlined in white, with wrong answers losing the outline. It also shows children where to drag items with flickering stars. This app can be intuitively used by our youngest players as everything has a visual or verbal prompt. I also really liked that if a wrong answer was chosen, the character explains the correct answer, and then asks the question again instead of just moving on. This truly is a great teaching app for our preschoolers.
Overall, Zorbit’s Math Adventure Preschool is a great app for parents looking to teach and reinforce a wide range of math concepts and skills. The app can easily be used independently and gives children practice with many important ideas that are essential for young learners.
