Math Mathews- Mental Math, by Kiupe, is available for both IOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch) and Android. Game play alternates with short quizzes of increasing difficulty. There are 8 levels focusing on addition and subtraction. Within each level are different groups of problems (easy, medium, difficult, and expert) to offer just the right amount of challenge.
So, for example, a child just mastering the basic facts from 1-10 can select an easy problem set. Older children who are working on 11-20 have a set designed for them, and those who have advanced beyond that can select problems using numbers from to 1-99.
The higher levels require more problem solving ability. In Level 6 (advanced set), problems look like this: ? – 9 – 5 = 2. Remember, with no paper and pencil involved, it truly becomes an exercise in mental math. I found that my students struggled at first with the multi-step problems in Math Mathews- Mental Math, but they got better with practice (See, it works!)
What Fun Educational Apps Liked-
Math Mathews- Mental Math has many of the same elements that made the original Math Mathews app a hit: a jump and slide video game, a graphic novel story line, and kids acting as main characters. It also has something that parents will appreciate: there are no ads, no in-app purchases, and no social media connections. It’s a fun way to exercise your child’s mind, while allowing them to enjoy a video game at the same time. As an educator, I appreciate the differentiated levels that make it accessible to children with a wide range of skills; Math Mathews-Mental Math will continue to provide a challenge for a long time.
Math Mathews- Mental Math has a great concept, and I think the developers made a wise move in allowing multiple players to save their progress. This was the one missing element from the original Math Mathews app for multiplication.
Math Mathews- Mental Math is availabe for download via the iTunes App Store - iOS Universal and Google Play (Android) - RRP - $0.99/£0.69/€0.89
