Cosmic Reactor Arithmetic, by Fingerprint Network, is available for iPad and iPad Mini. Players choose an avatar and a screen name from a list that is provided. Once each player has established a game identity, the competition begins. There are seven space-themed mini-games from which to choose. Visual instructions for each game provide clear playing rules.
Games can be customized to include one, two, or all four math operations (additions, subtraction, multiplication, and division). This makes it easy to present practice at the correct level. There are also number ranges, so the problems can include numbers from 1-10, 1-20, or 1-50.
The two players sit facing one another with the device in between them, heightening the competitive atmosphere. As problems are presented, each player answers questions as rapidly as possible. The first one to answer five or more questions is the winner of that round. The ultimate prize is becoming a Cosmic Reactor Champion.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
From a technical standpoint, Cosmic Reactor Arithmetic exceeds expectations. It has a simple, intuitive user interface designed to appeal to the target age group. The sound quality and graphic design are top notch. With names like Green Goo, Dark Planet, Hip World, and Electric Moon, the games are creatively designed for maximum interest. If you wish to register through the app, there are other features available to you as well, including individual progress reports and engagement (time on task) indicators.
Overall, Cosmic Reactor Arithmetic is a great app. My one hesitation in recommending it is the significant amount of data collection and marketing that is included in it. The parent portal can be accessed simply by reading number words (zero, three, seven, etc.); kids as young as five can do that. A suggestion would be to increase the level of security for the parent portal.
