Coloring apps are not new in the App Store, but they remain a favorite for children in the 4-8 year old age range. I like Color It Kids because it provides detailed coloring pages of famous landmarks and scenes from over 21 different countries. Included with the pictures are maps, flags, and information pages about the countries and the images that are shown. Color It Kids earns a Top Pick from Fun Educational Apps because it blends art, technology, and information into an app that children can enjoy for hours.Fun Educational Apps TOP PICKS
Color It Kids is a new app for the iPad, developed by The Ready Set Group, Ltd. It contains 120 child-friendly illustrations that can be turned into art simply by choosing a color and filling in a space. While most coloring apps rely on pictures of toys, dinosaurs, animals, and vehicles, Color It Kids presents images of the Eiffel Tower, the Statue of Liberty, Mount Vesuvius, and ancient Samurai warriors, to name just a few.
This is how it works: your child scrolls through the countries, selecting one. Then, a page appears that features between four and nine coloring pages, each representing a theme specific to that country. Clicking on a picture causes it to display an uncolored version of the picture (which can be printed as is for use with markers or colored pencils or as a finished page in full color).
The next step is to let your child’s imagination run free, choosing from among 60 different shades. Also included across the top of the page are familiar navigational icons, including go home, go back, undo, take a photo, email, print, and save to favorites. A blue letter “i” is also displayed; it stands for Information. Clicking it takes your child to a separate page. This page includes a full-color photograph plus a lengthy description of the landmark, giving excellent background information and contextual details.

The pictures in Color It Kids are well-drawn and show the objects clearly. All of them are titled, so it is easy to refer to them by name. Here is an example of the accompanying information for Ha Long Bay in Vietnam: “Ha Long Bay is in northeastern Vietnam. In Vietnamese, the name means “descending dragon bay.” Many Vietnamese believe that the islands were formed from the jewels dropped from the mouth of dragons, sent by the gods to protect the country from invaders.” This description puts the drawing in a larger context, and it gives your child a connection to the picture that is both meaningful and educational.
One suggestion I would make would be to move the color palette up slightly on the tablet; the bottom row of colors is cut off a bit, making them harder to select. However, I appreciate the extensive color palette. It’s the digital equivalent of a box of 64 Crayola crayons.
Color It Kids provides a quiet, fun activity for children during those “stay in your seat” times- at a restaurant, on an airplane, in a waiting room, etc. With a minimum of assistance, your child can enjoy this creative activity. It’s got all the requirements for a great art app that enriches your child’s global awareness, so Color It Kids has been selected as our latest Top Pick on Fun Educational Apps.
