Tic Toc Time: Break down the day to learn how to tell time by Seven Academy is an educational app developed for students beginning to learn time skills. An adorable beaver family walks the user through each step of telling time. High interest, seamless graphics make the gameplay fun for our young learners.
Players begin on the Compass level, learning to navigate north, south, east, west utilizing the gyroscope within the iPad to find directions in real time. From the compass, users move on to the Sun and Shadow section, where the sun moves as players manipulate the shadows to show specific times of day. Next, blast into space with father beaver and learn about night and day and the 24 hour clock.
The twenty four hour clock splits in two and becomes the familiar clock face we use daily. Students Play with the Clock and manipulate the hands independently to the quarter hours, then simultaneously to the five minutes, and lastly to the nearest minute. In the Clock Challenges children work on identifying clocks that are to set to quarter of, quarter to, and half past. They also must find clocks that are set to specific times. In Stop the Clock students must Bump the clock when the hands reach the desired time and earn points for how close they get to the time.
Through every level, students are instructed in the process of telling time by someone from the beaver family. As levels of each stage are unlocked, students earn seeds, water, and sun that are stored for their Montessori Garden (available in all Seven Academy games). Players can access the garden from the app and grow their prizes in the virtual garden.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
To begin with, this app is visually super appealing. The graphics are cartoon like and will be perfect for young learners. As far as the educational concept of the app - I really appreciated the attempt to build time skills based on basic skills and background knowledge. By beginning with compass skills and moving through the idea of shadows as a time telling device, children gain basic knowledge of how and why time exists. I loved that this enormously abstract idea, is made simple through the exploration of the sun, the earth, and then brought down to our level with the clock. I liked the various ways children can practice time skills - though I wish there were a few more levels for practicing basic telling time.
Overall, Tic Toc Time is a great tool for teaching time from the bottom up. As children begin to understand how time works, they are given plenty of opportunity to practice their new skills. For these reasons, Tic Toc Time has earned a Top Pick from Fun Educational Apps.
