Mr. Thorne’s Times Table Terra was developed by Mr. Thorne Productions for all IOS devices, including iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. The first thing you will notice is the British influence as you hear the introduction and you see a great shot of London superimposed on a globe.
In this app, your child’s job is to collect planets to be displayed in the Planetarium. This is accomplished by completing multiplication quizzes. A child must score 12/12 on all three quizzes for that multiplier (X1, X2, X3, etc. up to X12) in order to earn a planet.
The first quiz (Beginner level) is simply all the facts in order. The second quiz (First Class level) contains the same facts in random order.
The third quiz (World Class level) contains problems with a higher level of difficulty (14X2, 100X5, for example).
Also included for each multiplier is a short tutorial of Mr. Thorne reciting the facts for that number. This app is appropriate for any child who is learning the multiplication tables, which starts as early as third grade according to Common Core standards.
Watching Mr. Thorne is like watching a comedy skit. With his outlandish costumes, he keeps the app light and amusing. This is important since multiplication apps tend to become tedious. If I were to make a suggestion, it would be to include a little more in the way of instructions. We know that novice users of tablet devices are able to access more features when they are given specific directions. I think it would be splendid to have Mr. Thorne make a tutorial.
Anything that can make learning multiplication more fun is a definite plus. It’s even better when there is someone like Mr. Thorne there to help. If your child is of the age where multiplication is included in their classroom instruction, you should investigate Mr. Thorne’s Times Table Terra.
