Hanna & Henri was developed by Tales & Dice for all IOS platforms, including iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. It was created in Sweden, so the text and narration is available in both Swedish and English translations. The user interface is highly intuitive, with flashing arrows and folding page corners to indicate when it’s time to turn the page.
The story opens with Henri jumping out of bed. Your child helps him choose his clothes by pointing to a shirt and pants in his closet and dragging them over for Henri to slip on. As the story continues, take time to investigate all the hidden surprises that are waiting to be discovered; look for a smiling toaster that pops out its toast, a submarine periscope that lifts up and scans the room, and a squirrel that roots around in the trash. You child will follow Henri throughout the day, going to the toy store, biking to Hanna’s house, and finally, enjoying Hanna’s birthday party.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked-
The crisp, detailed artwork in Hanna & Henri catches your eye immediately. It’s fun to see how the artist pictures Henri’s house and his neighborhood. You can see the Swedish influence in the clothing style, food, and furniture, which adds a unique element to the story. Also appealing to children are the numerous sound effects that have been added; they will enjoy the whistles and the chimes and the barking. Believe it or not, there’s even a Mariachi band.
The best children’s stories are those that can be told quietly, with a parent and child snuggling closely together, sharing a story about a regular little boy. I like the way Henri’s feelings about Hanna are portrayed, and the care that he takes when picking out her special present. Because Hanna & Henri combines a wonderful story about friendship with well-designed graphics and clever animations, we recognize it as our latest Top Pick in the category of storybook apps.
