Buzzmath Middle School (for iPad2 & iPad3, plus Android) was developed by Scolab. It can be used as a classroom program that is administered by a math teacher, or it can be used by an individual student to supplement his/her classroom instruction. Here’s a brief summary of how it works: the basic app offers student practice sessions presented by grade. Seventh grade, for example, has over 100 activities on topics such as locating integers (negative and positive numbers) on a number line, identifying X and Y coordinates on a grid, and using the distributive property to solve an equation.
The list of topics in Buzzmath is extensive, and includes the following topics:
- number lines
- rational & irrational numbers
- numeric expressions
- algebraic equations
- tables and grid coordinates
- geometry and measurement
- graphing data
There are also missions (extension activities) available with the Premium upgrade as a challenge for advanced students.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked-
Buzzmath Middle School is a solid app that can be used for all students, including remedial, grade level, and advanced. Remedial students will benefit from the detailed problem explanations that are available with the Premium upgrade ($3.99 for 3 months, $5.99 for 6 months). Grade level and advanced students will be able to take advantage of the well-organized practice lessons. All students progress at their own pace.
The instructions for using Buzzmath are found in the Help Center which can be accessed from the opening screening. They are well written and do a good job of showing you what to do; I recommend you check them out. This is not the kind of app that can be picked up and used without some basic understanding of the math concepts being taught. Also, using the basic app (without the Premium upgrade) is difficult when the problems become more challenging, because without the explanation, it is hard to figure out the correct answer.
Expectations for math learning in middle school are increasing. Savvy parents need to keep up with the trend and provide supplemental math materials for their children if they are struggling. Buzzmath is one of the apps that is available to meet this need.
