The Gorilla Band is a cute 3D storybook app that has children swinging with the monkeys as they join the band. Twisty turny graphics and a storyline that involves the reader make this a fun app for the little ones.
Gorilla Band 3D Story Book with Music - Wasabi Productions is a new digital storybook with a musical twist. Graham Nunn writes a cute story about Melody McCann and her Jungle Music School. She teaches piano and violin to two little monkeys who find their lessons slightly boring. They hear other gorillas playing the drums and guitar and begin to expand their musical sound. Soon the Jungle School is full of music and instruments as gorillas come to join the band.
Players choose to have the story read aloud or read the story themselves. As you listen to the rhyming prose, narrated by a beautifully accented voice, users are asked to join the tale and prompt the monkeys to swing into the story. Readers are asked to tap, shove, and poke the monkeys to get them to come down and play. Also, tapping on the various monkeys elicits different musical sounds and comments. Tapping them multiple times brings different responses.
Additionally, the app offers a couple of other activities. Users can play the Gorilla Band Dance, to see the band perform their marquee song. More Songs has a lullaby version of a song for a quieter experience. The Play Studio Game is a fun activity for kids to test their musical knowledge. Tap the name button to hear the name of an instrument. Then find the instrument in the band. Tapping the musical note provides the instrument sound for users to locate.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
This is a cute little storybook app that young children will enjoy. The rhyming text is narrated in a beautifully accented voice that is fun to listen to. The story moves along with the help of the reader, so children have no choice but to be engaged. They must tap the monkeys to get them to come down from the trees. The 3D graphics are neat, with the monkey actually twisting and falling to the ground as the scene revolves around them. I also liked the range of instruments. From the double bass to the conga drum, with a saxophone thrown in for fun. Each monkey has its own personality, too. The piano player wears a pair of shades and the guitar player has on skin tight jeans and a headband. Yet they all come together in quite the ensemble.
Overall, Gorilla Band is a cute, interactive storybook app that features a talented group of monkeys. With a fun little game and story prompts to participate in the narrative, this app would be great for the 2-6 year old crowd.

This app was reviewed by Sarah Emerling, a mom, teacher, and technology coach. She doesn't think her own guitar skills would have gotten her into the Gorilla Band. You can follow her ed. tech. blog at The iLesson Lady.
