Little Red Riding Hood Mathematics was developed by SIA Ksenokss for all IOS platforms, including iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. All of the apps in their Magic Books series use characters borrowed from classic fairy tales, giving children an additional layer of interest and connection.
The basic app is available to download for free; it includes sample questions from each of the three separate modules. The complete modules are available to download (via in-app purchase); one is for children four and older, one is for children five and older, and the third one is for children six and older. As you might guess, this allows your child to be presented with material designed precisely for their age.
Little Red Riding Hood Mathematics is not a comprehensive tutorial of beginning math. Instead, it focuses on specific skills, such as counting object sets, comparing sets, and understanding word problems. Here is an example of the word problems for children six and up:
“Little Red Riding Hood was walking in the forest picking flowers. There were 8 red flowers and 3 yellow flowers in her bouquet. How many more red flowers are there than yellow ones?”
After listening to the problem, your child moves the correct numbers to create the number sentence 8-3=5. If an incorrect answer is chosen, your child is cued to “Try again.”
What Fun Educational Apps Liked-
The artwork in all of the Magic Books collection is whimsical and clever; using fairy tale characters as counters does make learning about math more enjoyable. I was also pleased that the word problems are a bit challenging. Each one uses a key vocabulary term that tells your child which operation to use (“all together,” “how many are left,” “more,” “went away,” and “divided up”).
Little Red Riding Hood Mathematics uses background music that is lively and crisp, but it tends to overpower the speaker’s voice. Fortunately, it is easy to go into Settings and lower the volume of the music or turn it off altogether.
Another good reason for considering Little Red Riding Hood Mathematics is that it is aligned to the Common Core Standards for Kindergarten & First Grade Math:
- Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities
- Count to tell the number of objects in a set
- Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in a second group
- Represent and solve words problems involving addition and subtraction.
If your child could benefit from some additional math support, remember "Practice Makes Perfect" and in this case, consider Little Red Riding Hood Mathematics.
Little Red Riding Hood Mathematics is availabe for download via the iTunes App Store - Universal App
RRP - Free with additional pack via in-App Purchase ($1.99/£1.49/€1.79)
Note to parents:
At the time of this review, Little Red Riding Hood Mathematics provides a safe, secure environment, with no access to social media and no ads. The app does, however, have links to the App Store, as well as allowing in-app purchases.
