Frugoton Shapes & Colors - Education and Fun for Kids is a great new preschool app focusing on essential early learning skills. Basic shape and color activities reinforce skills for our youngest learners in a way that is fun and easy to understand.
Frugoton Shapes and Colors by FRUGOTON is a really easy way for young children to engage with shapes and colors. The app opens to a very easy screen where children simply tap play to begin. The game moves linearly through a series of exercises focused on practicing color and shape skills.
Each activity has three levels, each a tiny bit harder than the last. Children begin by tracing a circle, square, and triangle. They then move on to matching colors, tapping a specific colored shape, sorting multiple colors, stacking shapes, matching sizes, and so on and so forth. All of the activities focus on the beginning shapes: circle, square, and triangle and the primary colors: red, blue, and yellow.
The directions are written and not read aloud. However, the app has very clear pictorial pictures that young learners will understand. From each game screen, the user can tap on the question mark for a reminder of how to do the activity. They can also tap the shapes button to see a visual menu of all of the games available. At the time of review, the app is free to try, with an in-app purchase to unlock the rest of the levels. Though we found that by starting at activity one and playing straight through, we could play all of the games. We could not however, play them from the menu, as they were locked.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked!
This app is great for the toddler crowd. There are a lot of different ways to practice the same skill. Repetition is an important way for young learners to practice. While the app only focuses on three specific colors and three specific shapes, it does that very well. From matching to tapping to sorting, the app has children use their knowledge in different ways. My son's favorite activities were the ones that were a little different. He liked bringing the big shape to the little shape in a magnet like collection activity and stacking the shapes to get to the line.
Overall, Frugoton Shapes and Colors is a really solid app for practicing very basic shape and color skills. It's great for the earliest learners. It may not provide the depth of skills that preschool students need, but would be good for toddlers just beginning to understand basic concepts.
