Finding a new way to engage kids in multiplication practice is tough with the market flooded with so many math apps. However, 10monkeys Multiplication has won a spot among our top picks as a fun and engaging way to challenge students to learn and master their multiplication tables - iPad/iPhone/iPod and Android devices via Google Play
Developer 10monkeys.com is a paid math learning site with over 200 different multiplication activities. They've gone mobile with the development of 10monkeys Multiplication. Players must help Bo the ape free his ten monkey friends from bags, boxes, and cages by solving different multiplication problems. In an arcade style game, players work on each of the times tables from two to ten, plus a mixed level as well.
Each of the times table levels are slightly different, with a graphically stunning background and one of two different styles of game. In all levels, a multiplication problem from that times table (twos, threes, etc.) is shown at the top and green dots with answers appear on screen. In one style of play, users must tap the stationary answer as quickly as possible to beat a timer. Tapping the wrong answer makes the timer drop down quickly. In the other type of game, the green dots either fall from the sky or bounce up from the bottom. Tap the correct answer before it falls out of sight. Players have three lives. Tapping a wrong answer or missing an answer as it falls off the screen will end one of the lives. Just to shake things up - some of the problems have the answer on screen two or three times.
The settings are easy to use. Toggle the sound on/off or reset the levels for a new player. There is also a global leader board so that after freeing a monkey friend, players can continue to play to beat their won high scores and those of kids around the world. There is also a tutorial tab that has each of the times tables listed for student reference.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
As a teacher, I love any app that provides my students with a completely engaging way of practicing a skill. 10monkeys does this with their arcade style gaming. Kids are so easily sucked into games, that something like this is an easy way for me to sneak some education into their iPad time. The awesome, 3D like graphics are gorgeous, and monkeys are typically a hit in any game. To free each of the monkeys, players must hit a pre-determined point to unlock the trap. Having a goal to reach really motivates students and keeps them playing if they miss the target. Adding scores to a global leader board also encourages kids to keep playing. (Though I caution parents and teachers to address usernames and never putting your real name online!)
Overall, 10monkeys Multiplication is a top pick for me because it has everything I love about a solid math app. Engaging games, targets to reach, leader boards, monkeys, and oh wait ... education! This will definitely be on my top list of apps to introduce to the kids when school starts up.
10monkeys Multiplication is availabe for downlaod iPad/iPhone/iPod and Android Devices:
Note to Parents: This app does link to external sites - but only Apple, Facebook, Twitter, and the parent site www.10monkeys.com with the goal of having you rate and follow their app. Additionally, the app does collect data as far as using your high scores to rank you globally among the players. I can't see that the information links to or is located anywhere but on the leader board. There is no way to contact others through the leader board.
This app was reviewed by Sarah Emerling, a mom, teacher, and technology coach. This review took her a while to write as she tried very hard to get her name on the leader board - but was unsuccessful. Apparently she needs to practice her multiplication tables more. You can follow her ed. tech. blog at The iLesson Lady.
