- The learn module teaches about pitch. Recognizing pitch and comparing two pitches (higher and lower) are the first goals in reading and playing music. Even though it sounds simple, Music Learning Lab has broken this task down into 14 different steps. By the end, your child is able to imitate tone patterns from a model.
- The create module allows your child to develop a short melody that can be played against a musical backdrop.
- The play module is a series of three mini-games that review the skills previously learned and offer a mini jam session as a reward.
- The trophy module is a collection of the instruments and activities that have been earned so far. The basic app (which provides only a few of the beginning lessons) is free to try, with an option to purchase the Full Version. Multiple users can create their own accounts and chart their progress.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked-
I appreciate the way Music Learning Lab follows a logical progression of skills from simple (hearing a pitch and matching it) to more complex (imitating a pattern). The
sound quality and the technical aspects of this app are flawless. Clearly, the developers understand the basics of musical training, because they were able to create the small, baby steps necessary to help little ones achieve a basic understanding of what music is
Music Learning Lab requires some adult assistance to navigate through the levels, at least at first. At times, the directions seemed a little confusing to me, and I wasn’t sure whether to wait, or to touch the character or the arrow; after a little trial and error, though, it became more obvious. The variety of instruments was great, with common ones (trumpet, piano) being supplemented with some of the more unusual instruments (marimba, sitar). The price for the Full Version of Music Learning Lab is on the expensive end, but keep in mind that it offers something not available in other preschool music apps.
Overall, this is a good place to start developing your child's appreciation for all things musical.
Music Learning Lab is available for download via the iTunes App Store - Universal App
Free to download - Full Version Available via in-app purchase.
Review by Julie Peterson, a speech/language pathologist (SLP) currently working in a school setting, serving children with special needs ages 6-14. Music has always been an important part of her life, and she passed this love of music on to her children.
