Meet the Insects: Water and Grass Edition, available for the iPad, was developed by NCSOFT. It contains five sections, each one presenting information in a different way. In this particular app, the developers have included the following insects: water bugs, beetles, honey bees, dragonflies, and mantises. The Home page can be a little overwhelming at first glance, but think of it as a hub from which all the other sections can be accessed. Everything a child might want to discover about these particular insects is covered in the app. What about their life cycle? That’s in the Insect Stories section. How about other insects that are related to it? That’s in the See Insects section. Can I see how it moves? Look for that information in Multimedia. Is there a place for me to write down what I learn? Of course, it’s in the Observation Journal. Where can I test my knowledge about these insects? It’s in the Quiz section.
- A set of insect iconsappears when you touch the bottom left hand corner of any screen other than the Home screen. It shows the different species that are available. Touch any of these icons, and the screen immediately switches to that group.
- The second tool is the navigation menu, found on the bottom of the screen, accessible by swiping the yellow down arrow. This is where you find short cuts to navigate around the app quickly, without having to return to the Home screen.
- The final tools are the moving arrows that appear. By swiping a moving arrow, you advance to the next screen in that section.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked-
The photography and videography used in all the Meet the Insects apps is phenomenal. It looks so realistic that my cat tried to take a swipe at a water bug crawling across the screen of my iPad. The photos are taken at such close range that even small details on the antennae or in the eyes become incredibly clear. One clever feature on the Home page is the sun or moon emblem in the top right corner. Touching it allows you to change the time of day from morning to night. Night is fun because the insects start chirping and buzzing.
Despite the fact that some insects can be annoying, they appeal to youngsters because of their small size and their curious behavior. I’m not totally sure how insects were chosen for this particular group, and there is no way to see a Table of Contents ahead of time. So, if, for example, your child’s interest were butterflies, it wouldn’t be possible to search for the edition that includes butterflies. Despite this drawback, Fun Educational Apps still recommends Meet the Insects: Water and Grass Edition and awards it a Top Pick in the category of science and nature education.
