iMaster - 3rd Grade Math by Brandon Smith is a quiz app geared toward third graders and their parents or teachers. Quizzes on Add/Subtract, Fractions, Greater/Less, Divide/Multiply, Base-Ten, and Numbers are offered on the main menu. From this screen, users simply tap the test they'd like to take. From here you can also see the progress toward mastery of each topic and select whether the quizzes are timed or not. You can also reset progress if you want to retest or switch the user.
Mastery for this app is considered 80%. Students must pass each quiz three times, achieving at least 80%. Each quiz has 13 questions and the app boasts over 75 math questions total. When the student has mastered all six sections, he can pass the Main Test - which is a collection of all of the quiz questions.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
The question types are varied in each of the sections. I liked the balance of visual questions, calculations, and word problems. A weakness we see constantly in mathematics is a student's inability to answer word problems, even if they have solid calculation skills. I also liked the Base Ten questions and Greater Than/Less Than questions. There are not a lot of apps that cover these topics. The Numbers section also covered some graph and calendar reading skills, which also are a weakness for our math students. I also liked that the mastery level is 80%, leaving some room for error. The fact that the students have to pass the test three times also shows the students have sustained mastery of the skills, not just passing luck.
I do have a few cautions on this app though. For one, I had several questions where there was no correct answer. All three choices were incorrect (and had me second guessing my own basic fraction skills!) Also, while I like that the students have to take the quiz three times, the questions aren't terribly varied. I'd love to see a little more depth in the question pool so that students have more opportunities to show mastery. As a teacher, I'd also really like to see the ability to load different users so that multiple children can have their progress monitored. At this point, the app only allows for one user - but progress can be reset for a new user to begin. Additionally, the app doesn't record the scores of the quizzes (passed or failed) only that the quiz was mastered. By adding the ability to see the quiz history and scores, this would make a great record keeping app.
Overall, iMaster - 3rd Grade Math is a nice little quiz app for parents to use to see how their students are doing on basic math skills. The different sections allow parents to customize which skills they'd like to check up on. With a few tweaks and additions this would also make a good app for teachers to use.
iMaster - 3rd Grade Math is available for download via the iTunes App Store - Universal App - RRP:$2.99/£1.99/€2.69
