It's not often that an app really hits me and sucks me in, but developer E3 Imagine has done that with Count Around the World. Join children from around the world as they teach you basic number skills through a variety of activities and beautiful videos. Trace and count your way through ten while exploring other families and their cultures in this Top Pick from Fun Educational Apps.
The app focuses on numbers one through ten. In almost book like fashion, turn from page to page as you count up. On each page, you can earn a star for each of the five activities for every number. The number page opens to an image of an absolutely beautiful child with the corresponding number of something: one camel, six tea cups, eight buckets. Tap the number to follow the child's face as it guides you in tracing the number. Star number two is earned by watching a short little video of the child and his or her family. For instance, meet Martia who lives in Israel and likes to have tea parties, Alex who grows mangos in Jamaica, or a Usef whose grandpa owns a camel in Egypt. The videos are very high quality and give the user a glimpse into a life so similar to their own, but also very different.
The other activities on each page include a line tracing activity, where kids trace a squiggly line to the country where each child is from; a little four piece photo puzzle of the child and his or her family, and a number catching puzzle where the numbers are racing around the screen and you must catch each digit to put it back in order.
What Fun Educational Apps Liked
I will openly admit that I love any opportunity to teach my child about cultural diversity. This app is simply a beautiful way to help my son explore the idea that there are children all around world who are just like him. The videos of these children are so well done and the kids are so very real. By focusing on children and their families, the developers have brought the world to your child's lap in a way that they can absolutely connect to. Oh wait, and it teaches them about counting, too! The app does a great job of diversifying the way that children engage with numbers and create a tool for learning to recognize digits, count with concrete items, and trace the digits. Kids will work to earn stars and the quirky little song that comes with each star. On top of teaching numbers and opening up the world to our children, the app also gives back. For every app downloaded, the developers donate a book to a child in need. Seriously, how can you go wrong with this app?
Overall, Counting Around the World, earned its Top Pick status for three reasons. First, for the great number activities that will help your toddler learn his early number skills. Second, for opening up the world and making it accessible to the youngest in our families. And lastly, for not just making a great app, but for sharing it by giving back to the children who help make it so successful. I am very excited to see the upcoming apps from this developer.
Count Around the World is available for download via the iTunes App Store - Universal App
